Subject: FCC Computers still down

Just some info for you.  I called the FCC today  and got the taped message that the computers were down.  Someone posted they were down yesterday.

According to the person I spoke to, they will be down on Aug 25 & 26 and back online on the 29th.  Apparently they were useing two systems.  Part of the new and the old, with two seperate databases.  The are putting all information on the new system into one database.

Hope this speeds things along.  So don't bother to call them today as they cannot tell you any useful information at all until the system is back online Monday.

If i agreed with you any more i would seek psychoanalysis!  Finding
useful info about amateur radio is becoming a full time job around here.
After wading through the gripe after endless gripe, and who did not
like what peice of gear, i feel that much time is wasted.  If the
super pole 2000 with no-touch remote tuner doesn't work as expected,
do something crazy, like BUILD something better and cheaper.

I fully support rec.radio.amateur.whining, thus eliminating "cross posting"
of verbal flatulence to technical groups.

     I have a problem with this sig, I know what a driveway is but I do not
     generally drive on a parkway, whatever one of those is. I assume it is the
     path that goes through a park? There is a parkway station, but again one
     would never drive on it as the roof would collapse.

Perhaps if you knew what a parkway was, and lived in an area where that
term is used, you would drive on one. Dictionaries can be so instructive:

                park.way (n) A wide thoroughfare adorned with
                spaces planted with turf and trees.

In other words, a highly landscaped highway. The term seems more
prevalent in the Eastern U.S. I believe New Jersey's toll way is
called "The Garden State Parkway". I hope this helps you deal
with your problem. (Oh, and don't expect to make sense of my
.sig either.)  :-)

Subject: PLSE INCLUDE SASE FOR DIRECT DX QSL CARDS!!!

After seeing Sharon's post on no SASE's for QSL's I wanted to add
my two cents' worth.

    I recently went on a trip to 6Y. I worked the CW WW WPX
CW contest as 6Y7M. This was the first time the 6Y7 prefix was
activated. While 6Y is not a rare country, I've still received
hundreds of cards. Many cards included an SASE, and an occasional
envelope included a $1 plus an SASE. For this I'm very
appreciative.
    The way I handled my cards is: Those who sent me an SASE,
or some form of return postage, got sent out right away. Those that
didn't sat in the bin until I got around to going to the post
office to mail them. On those that sent no postage, I put a
simple note on the cards: "S.A.S.E. next time, okay? Tnx."

I am a contester/DX'er. That is how I enjoy this multi-faceted
hobby. Since this is how I enjoy this hobby, I make thousands
of QSO's per year. I'll QSL every one of 'em, but those that
want/need my card for whatever award usually send an SASE. If
they don't, well, they'll have to wait a while. I'm not trying
to punish them, it just comes down to the fact that 1) I'm  just
out of college with a low-paying job, and food/rent are more
important than QSL'ing, and 2) I'm very busy, and what little
free time I have I would rather spend with my girlgriend or on
the air than filling out QSL's. I understand that there is an
obligation for getting the cards out in a reasonably timely
fashion, and I do my best to fulfill that obligation.

My advice (for what it's worth): If you have a QSO with ANY
station, DX or otherwise, and you REALLY, REALLY want that
card, send an SASE. It shows the operator that you're SERIOUS
about his card, and they will accomodate you faster than if
you don't send an SASE. My return rates for my outgoing QSL
requests skyrocketed whjen I started including SASE's in my
QSL requests for various awards I was/am pursuing.

This commentary deals with my direct requests... haven't been
hit with the bureau onslaught yet.

Yup, in fact they even do quite well hooked up to an outside antenna in a
strong-signal area. I live 2 miles from a major paging/cellphone/broadcast
/public service radio site. An FM station is barely audible on one of our
telephones. My scanner, on another outside antenna, is hammered on UHF - the
signals come and go as the junk comes booming in, drowning them out. For 2m, I
rigged up a simple 2m 1/4 wave groundplane up about 25' on the chimney. An
IC2AT hooked up to this was nearly useless - the other station would disappear
into the noise every time some paging transmitter fired up. The HTX202 rejects
all of that, and is a useful base-station radio. It even puts out 7ish watts
when hooked up to a gel-cell. Rat Shack done good.

Sometime in an earlier life, I heard that QST was the morse way to say
"go over to phone", in other words, now that our cw traffic is complete,
let's talk.  It must be false, as no one else has mentioned it.
